Welcome to Cherokee Photography Club

The Cherokee Photography Club was established in September 2004 as a social club with the goal of providing a forum for photographers of all levels, novice through professional, the opportunity to share with others their interests, ideas, experience, and passion for the art of photography.

Our mission is to support and promote the art and science of photography in all styles and formats, as individuals, as an organization, and as part of the community so that all may enjoy and benefit from the images of our lives.

Come along and join us at one of our bi-monthly meetings, or if you are ready you can become a member today!

Mentorship:

While there are no formal arrangements in place at this time, many of the club members are very happy to assist in the photographic development of newer members. Joining field trips, listening to monthly presentations, and entering competitions are all also excellent ways to pick up skills and understand better the art of photography.

Formal Instruction:

The club does not offer formal instruction at this time. There are excellent classes available nearby, however, as part of the community outreach program at Kennesaw State University. Classes include Photo I (Introduction), Photo II (Photography as Art) and Lightroom and Photoshop.

Competition Rules
Competition Rules

Eligibility:

Only Cherokee Photography Club members in good standing are eligible to compete in regular club competitions. Dues must be current to enter.

Competition:

A competition shall be held when there are at least three entries from at least two members.

Entries:

Each member may enter no more than one entry per medium, which includes color prints, monochromatic prints, and projected digital images. Images which have won a First, Second, Third or Honorable Mention place in regular competitions are not eligible for re-entry in any form, except for Second Chance (if held). All images used for competition must be taken within two years of the competition date, and must be made with a camera.

Print Presentation:

Each entrant must label each entry with her/his name, address, phone number and print name. Arrows or thumb dots must be placed to show correct orientation for viewing. Prints may be permanently mounted on photographic-type mount board, flush or with a border, or a single mat overlay may be used. No double matting or double mounting is acceptable. No form of decoration may be used, i.e., decorative scrolling on mats. Prints shall not be signed or titled on the front. Maximum print size, including mount board, shall not exceed 16 in. x 20 in. The combined thickness of mount and print shall not exceed 1/4 in. Frames, glass, plastic over wraps and the like are not allowed. All print competition entries must be accompanied by a written entry form.

Digital Images:

Digital images may be color or monochromatic. Files must be uploaded no later than 6:00 pm the day before the competition. Files uploaded must be JPGs and no larger than 8MB. Please include image title and photographer name on all entries

Judging:

Entries must meet the theme of the competition category. Entries will be accepted between 6:30 and 6:55pm for judging. Members do not have to be present as long as arrangements are made for turn in and pickup of entries. The club will not be responsible for entries left behind. All entries will be judged without a point system. Judges will view and judge prints displayed together. Judges will choose a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and HM place.

Awards:

Points will be awarded on the following basis:

  • First Place - 5 points
  • Second Place - 4 points
  • Third Place - 3 points
  • Honorable Mention - 2 points
  • Entry in a category - 1 point

Points earned accumulate toward the Photographer of the Year Annual Awards. Points also will accumulate and be tabulated for winners in the Photographer of the Year-Color Print; Photographer of the Year--Monochromatic Print; and Photographer of the Year--Digital Image Divisions as well. Points will stay in the medium where they are accumulated and cannot cross media.

Second Chance Competition:

The Second Chance Competition is open to members whose entries were awarded a 2nd, 3rd, or Honorable Mention placement during the current competition year. This provides a " second chance " for those entries to be included with the other 1st Place Winners, and become eligible for the Best of the Year Competition which is open to only the 1st Place Winning Images. Members whose images qualify are limited to a maximum of only one entry per category, i.e. one Color Print, one Monochrome Print, and one Digitally Submitted Image.

In addition, any member who did not earn a ribbon for placement during the current competition year, may enter one image only that was entered in a competition during the current competition year and did not place. Once again, this provides these entries a " second chance " to be included with the 1st Place Winners and become eligible for the Best of the Year Competition.

There are no points earned for the Second Chance Competition since all entries have been previously judged. It is simply a " second chance " for 1st Place.

Best of the Year:

All first place winning entries are eligible to compete in this competition held in December. It must be the same print or digital file which won during the year. It cannot be reprinted. Photographer of the Year points are not earned in the Best of the Year Contest.

Conduct:

Members are asked not to discuss entries with the judge during competition. Please allow the competition chairperson to respond to any queries the judge might have about a particular entry. Members are asked to give the judge all courtesy during his/her judging and refrain from comments that might alter his/her judging or distract his/her attention. Members are asked to refrain from talking, even to the person sitting or standing next to you, during the actual judging process and to turn off all cell phones. Members are also asked NOT to pick up or handle any of the prints and NOT to have food or drink near any of the prints.
